❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions students ask most.
Am I eligible if I'm an international student?
Most federal programs (Canada Summer Jobs, FSWEP) require Canadian citizenship or permanent residency. However, many SWPP programs (Magnet, TECHNATION, BioTalent, ECO Canada) allow international students on a valid study or work permit to participate — your employer applies on your behalf. Always check the specific program's eligibility page before applying.
Can I stack multiple programs at the same time?
Generally no — you can't double-dip on federal wage subsidies for the same placement. For example, you can't have an employer claim both Canada Summer Jobs and SWPP for the same position. However, you can stack non-competing benefits: e.g., your employer claims SWPP while you separately apply for NSERC USRA with a different supervisor. Ask your co-op office what's allowed.
What if I'm not in a co-op program? Can I still access these?
Yes! Many programs don't require formal co-op enrollment. Canada Summer Jobs, FSWEP, Ontario Summer Company, STIP Green Jobs, and NRC IRAP are all available to students outside co-op programs. For SWPP subsidies, your employer still needs to have a work-integrated learning agreement with your school — talk to your career centre, they can often set this up even if you're not in co-op.
Does my employer apply, or do I?
For SWPP programs (Magnet, TECHNATION, OCC TOP, BioTalent, etc.), the employer applies for the wage subsidy — you just need to find an employer willing to participate. For research programs like NSERC USRA, your faculty supervisor initiates the application. For government jobs like FSWEP and Canada Summer Jobs, you apply directly through jobs.gc.ca or Job Bank.
What's the difference between SWPP and Canada Summer Jobs?
Canada Summer Jobs funds non-profits, public sector, and small businesses to hire students aged 15–30 at minimum wage or above — you search and apply for specific posted jobs. SWPP (Student Work Placement Program) is a wage subsidy that any eligible employer can access to cover 50–70% of your salary during a co-op or WIL placement — your employer applies before your term starts. CSJ = you find the job; SWPP = your employer gets a rebate on your wages.
How much can I actually earn this summer?
It depends on the program and province. Federal government jobs (FSWEP) pay $17.75–$38/hr. Ontario Public Service pays $17–$23/hr. Co-op placements at tech companies often pay $22–$40/hr. NSERC USRA awards are $6,670 for 16 weeks. Research-heavy positions with Mitacs pay $15,000 per 4–6 month unit. A typical 16-week full-time summer at $20/hr = roughly $12,800 before tax.
I'm in high school. Are any of these open to me?
Yes! Canada Summer Jobs hires students 15–30 at many non-profits and local businesses. Ontario Summer Company is open to ages 15–29 if you're starting your own business. The City of Oshawa posts recreation jobs starting at age 14. Many municipal parks and recreation departments hire at 15 or 16. Filter to "All Programs" and look for the "Ages 15+" tags.
Is this website affiliated with the Government of Canada?
No. LaunchPad Canada is an independent student resource platform. We compile and verify public information about government and employer programs, but we are not affiliated with any program or employer listed here. Always verify program details directly with the provider before applying. Links go directly to official program pages.
